Beeping begins at 20mR/hr, increasing in frequency in proportion to the radiation level. Powered by a 9-Volt battery, included, which lasts 50 hours at normal background levels. This is essentially the same unit as the RDX Nuclear DX-1 which you can get elsewhere for about $150. It is a fine $150 Geiger counter, but a horribly overpriced $300 Geiger counter.
For that kind of money you're much better off getting an International Medcom CRM-100 (a far superior model) for $275.

I am a collector and dealer in crystals and minerals and use this meter to check for general levels of radiation - it is surprisingly sensitive for it's size and price, and very well-built - much more so than others in this price range. If you just need a good, high-quality detector for general use and are not in need of scientific measurements, this is a good choice. When purchased new, mine came with a sample of uranium ore to verify the functionality.
